Authors’ Corner

Instructions for Authors

Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be between 3000-5000 words. Shorter papers are also acceptable.

Submissions must be made electronically via email. Please email manuscript to the IJPH’s Managing Editor, Mr. David Kane, at david.kane@bcu.ac.uk.

The manuscript’s first page should include the title of the paper; name(s) of the author(s), and for each author a full institutional address; and an abbreviated title (for running headlines within the article). At the bottom of the page give the full name and address (including telephone and fax number and email address if possible) of the author to whom all correspondence (including proofs) should be sent, or the Corresponding Author.

The manuscript’s second page should repeat the title and contain an abstract of not more than 200 words. Every manuscript submitted to the IJPH, with the exception of Letters to the Editor, must include an abstract. Each abstract should be accompanied by 4 or 5 keywords chosen by the authors to assist in indexing the paper. Authors are advised to use the Index Medicus medical subject headings list when possible. The list can be found at the National Library of Medicine’s Medical Subject Headings website at www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/meshhome.html.

The manuscript’s third page should repeat the title as a heading to the main body of the text. Within the text section, headings and subheadings should be typed on a separate line without numbering, indentation, or bold or italic typeface.

All submissions must be accompanied by a signed statement from all authors confirming that:

  1. the material has not been published elsewhere (if published in part elsewhere, this should be acknowledged and if necessary copies sent to the Editor);
  2. the paper is not currently being considered for publication elsewhere;
  3. all authors have been personally and substantially involved in the work leading to the paper, and will hold themselves jointly and individually responsible for its content;
  4. that relevant ethical safeguards have been met in relation to the confidentiality and consent of the patients involved in the research; and
  5. where possible and appropriate that the subjects of the research are consulted in the design and execution of the research.

This statement must also declare sources of funding, direct or indirect. In addition, each paper should be accompanied by a Declaration of Conflicting Interests outlining any actual or perceived conflicts of interest the author(s) might have related to the authorship and/or publication of the submitted manuscript. This declaration can either be:

  1. “The authors declared no conflicts of interest with respect to the authorship and/or publication of this manuscript.”; or
  2. “The authors declared a conflict(s) of interest as follows:” with a clear articulation of the conflict(s) following the colon.

Authors should ensure that both clinical and non-clinical research is conducted under the highest achievable standards and the methodology demonstrating this is included in submitted manuscripts. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.

Review Process

The corresponding author will receive written notice that the manuscript has been received. All manuscripts are subject to blind review by 3 experts in fields related to the topic or methods of the manuscript. All submissions will be sent anonymously to independent referees.

The corresponding author will receive written notice regarding the outcome of the review process. Revised and resubmitted manuscripts will be reviewed by the same reviewers that evaluated the original submission.

References

All publications cited in the text should be listed following the text; similarly all references listed must be mentioned in the text. Style, statistical reporting, and reference citations should conform to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (N Engl J Med. 1993;336:309-315). Within the text references should be indicated by the author’s name and year of publication in parentheses, e.g., (Tones, 1996) or (Wilson & Styles, 1990), or if there are more than 2 authors (Power et al, 1996). Where several references are quoted consecutively within the text the order should be alphabetical. If more than 1 paper from the same author(s) and year are listed, the date should be followed by (a), (b), (c), etc., e.g., (Plant, 1990a).

References should be alphabetized at the end of the manuscript text, in the following formats:

Binswanger I, Stern M, Deyo R, et al. Release from prison - a high risk of death for former inmates. New Engl J Med. 2007;356(2):157-165.

Darke S, Degenhardt L, Mattick R. Mortality Amongst Illicit Drug Users: Epidemiology, Causes, and Interventions. 2007, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press.

Donnelley R. National Forum on Drug-Related Deaths in Scotland. Annual Report 2007. 2007, Edinburgh: The Scottish Government.

Illustrations

All illustrations (including photographs, graphs, and diagrams) should be referred to as Figures, numbered in Arabic numerals, and their position indicated in the text (e.g., Figure 3). Each should be submitted, along with captions, on a separate page, and should include keys to symbols, and should make interpretation possible without reference to the text. Figures should ideally be professionally drawn and designed with the format of the IJPH in mind and should be capable of reduction. If the author(s) wishes to have published more than 4 figures for any given manuscript, there will be a charge of US$50 per additional figure. Color figures that will enhance the paper may be accepted for publication. The author(s) must be prepared to pay a per page charge of US$500 for the first image and US$250 each for additional images. Color figures should be submitted at 300 dpi resolution.

Tables

Tables should be submitted on separate pages, numbered in Arabic numerals, and their position indicated in the text (e.g., Table 1). Each table should have a short, self-explanatory title. Vertical rules should not be used to separate columns. Units should appear in parentheses in the column heading but not in the body of the table. Any explanatory notes should be given as a footnote at the bottom of the table. If the author(s) wishes to have published more than 4 tables for any given manuscript, there will be a charge of US$50.00 per additional table.

Inquiries

All inquiries should be directed to the IJPH’s Managing Editor, Mr. David Kane, at david.kane@bcu.ac.uk.
